Networking is a great way to open doors and have a real person look at your application. With automated job application systems, an open post might get hundreds to thousands of applicants. Usually there just aren't enough resources on the hiring company’s side to actually read through all of those applications. Some companies also use filtering mechanisms to auto-reject candidates based on criteria like location, college degree, GPA, or a missing keyword.
By networking with someone who works at the company, they can internally flag your application for the hiring team. In bigger companies, there might be a system for them to put your name in that quite literally moves you to the top of the pile. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sending the hiring manager a message on Slack or Teams.
Networking alone will not guarantee you a job. If your application isn’t compelling, it won’t be enough for someone to flag it.
