When looking at statistics, it appears that there are just as many companies hiring as in previous years. However, when talking to people on the job market, something about the year does feel different.
During Covid, it was a “job seeker” market. This means that people applying to jobs had most of the leverage. Companies were struggling to fill their headcount as industries like tech and healthcare boomed during the pandemic. There were stories of people working several remote jobs. Traveling nurses were making double or triple their usual rate if they stayed local.
In the post-covid market, we are experiencing a reversal of that growth. Some industries like tech have actively done layoffs. Most industries seem to be slowing their hiring plans, even if they didn’t actively do layoffs. This can be good news if you need more time to prepare your applications, as roles are not completely filled. In previous years, hiring cycles could be completed as early as Fall of your senior year.
In this new competitive job market, finding a job will require some more effort.
