Why do people use the Socratic Method?

The Socratic Method is believed to be a method of learning that is more effective than other forms such as rote memorization or lecturing. In fact, one of the most prestigious boarding schools in America, the Phillips Exeter Academy, developed an entire physical format around it called the Harkness table. Students sit at an oval table with a teacher, questioning each other out loud. Through this exchange, students can learn more deeply and challenge themselves more thoroughly.

How can I use the Socratic Method without a Harkness table?

If you aren't attending Phillips Exeter Academy, you can still replicate this experience at home! Using Brainstory, you can have an open-ended exchange on any topic you'd like. Brainstory won't act like the know-it-all who just spits "did you know" facts back at you. Rather, Brainstory aims to engage you with questions, much like the Socratic Method. You'll find yourself more deep in thought than simply reading about a subject.
